Professional barbers groom men by maintaining their hairstyles by cutting and shaping hair. They specialize in men's hair and to become a barber one must complete a formal education program that gets them a license to work. Individuals interested in a career as a barber can enroll in any state-licensed Barber school or training program.
Students should ensure that a school of their choice meets state licensing requirements. They can do this by checking the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences. An accredited program teaches them to learn to provide hair care services like trimming, cutting, styling and shampooing hair for clients.
Schools that offer Barber programs include Florida Academy of Health and Beauty, The Hair Design School and Borner's Barber College. You need to obtain a Diploma, Certificate or Degree in Barbering. Barbers must show proof of all relevant coursework and training to meet the requirements of a licensing exam which vary by state.
Some Barbering courses include skin care, safety, reception, shop management and sales. Barber programs take about nine months to complete and can be found in vocational schools or community colleges where students can obtain a Barbering diploma, certificate or associate degree.
After completing programs graduates can take their state's Barber's license exam. Barbers must also hold a high school diploma and be at least 16 years old in order to take the license exam. As per the Bureau of Labor Statistics the licensing exam consists of a written test and a hands-on styling or oral test to demonstrate skills.
